An Iranian immigrant living in New Orleans detained by ICE last month has been released, our partners at WWL-TV report.

Mandonna "Donna" Kashanian was allowed to stay in the U.S. since her student visa expired in the 1970s, so long as she checked in regularly with immigration officials and didn't break the law.

After ICE took her into custody on June 22, an outcry from her Lakeview neighbors and even House Majority Leader Steve Scalise helped secure her release.

According to the report, Scalise's office plans to work with Kashanian's attorneys to try and secure permanent legal resident status or asylum.
