New Orleans saw 280 homicides in 2022, the most in the city since the 1990s.

"Things are bad, and they have gotten progressively worse," New Orleans Metro Crime Commission President Raphael Goyeneche told WWL's Newell Normand.

He said numbers compiled from the NOPD and the coroner showed 2022 homicides were up 28 percent compared to 2021.

Compared to the "low water mark" of 2019... Goyeneche says homicides are up 133 percent for 2022. Carjackings are up 150 percent.  Shootings rose 88 percent. Armed robberies are up 20 percent.

"It's not good news, and unfortunately we're off to a troubling start in the new year as well."

The MCC says that in 2019 there were more than 1,300 NOPD officers, at last report NOPD had barely 900 officers now.

"There is a direct correlation between the violent crime escalating and the number of police officers declining," Goyeneche explained.

A triple homicide reported across from the Fairgrounds this morning brought the total for 2023 to four in three days.  That's an early average of 1.25 per day.
