Nungesser focused on midterms, not 2023 Governor's Race

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser remains mum on whether or not he’s running for Governor next year. Nungesser told WWL’s Tommy Tucker he won’t make a decision until after the November mid-terms, and right now his focus is completely on flipping the US House and Senate for Republicans.

“If we don’t make some changes in the midterm… that’s the most important election of our lifetime and hopefully we can see some changes in this midterm then we can worry about Louisiana after those elections,” said Nungesser.

This weekend many of the most prominent Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, in the country gathered in New Orleans, Nungesser included. The Lt. Governor said the focus was on turning Congress red.

His message at the meeting of top donors was that Republicans need to avoid the same kind of mud-slinging brawl that resulted in the election of a Democratic Louisiana Governor in a deep red state. This comes as the hard right-wing and the conservative wing of the party remain at odds in primaries across the country.

“If they do that in primaries around the country… you won’t have good results and I think that message went well with some of the people there in some of the battleground states,” said Nungesser.
