Why is violent crime down so dramatically in New Orleans over the past fifteen months?
A new report is out showing what's made the difference despite a greatly depleted number of cops on the NOPD.
The Metro Crime Commission issued findings that the biggest factor in reducing the violence has been locking up suspects, particularly alleged killer.
"I believe that the decline is due in large part to the arrests that the NOPD has made," Commission President Rafael Goyeneche told WWL's Newell Normand. "There were 121 homicide suspects arrested between January 1st, 2023 and March 15th, 2024."
He says focusing resources on locking up bad guys has resulted in fewer crimes overall.
Year to date, the MCC finds a 44 percent drop in murder, 34 percent fewer shootings, a 47 percent decrease in car jackings and 54 percent fewer armed robberies.
"The police department's strategy has been to do a better job of trying to solve the homicides."
Goyeneche says it is paying dividends.
