A new report says New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell may have violated city policies regarding reimbursements for flight upgrades.
According to that report by our partners at NOLA.com, Mayor Cantrell has spent roughly $29,000 in city funds airfare upgrades so she can fly in either business class or first class instead of coach. The report says city policy requires employees to pay the difference for those upgrades when they fly in a section other than coach.
A Cantrell spokesman told NOLA.com that the city’s legal office would investigate the matter. That spokesman, Gregory Joseph, told the newspaper that the policy places no timeline on when an employee must pay back those extra charges.
This all comes as Mayor Cantrell faces widespread criticism for her travels abroad and her use of city funds to pay for those excursions.
Last week, Mayor Cantrell said her trips are necessary because she is an ambassador for the city of New Orleans.
Her extensive travels and their costs are cited among the reasons why organizers of the recall against Cantrell launched their effort to oust her from office.
