Leaders of the recall effort to remove the mayor of New Orleans from office say they are getting overwhelming support.
Recall Committee Chair Belden Batiste says, "I want the best for our city."
He told WWL's Newell Normand that it is time for change.
"When you are not doing your job, you must be held accountable."
Batiste says he has been bullied and threatened since starting the recall effort, but he won't let it stop him.
"I have the right to demand better for my city."
Vice Chair Eileen Carter urges all New Orleans voters to sign a petition.
"Look around your city. Look at your quality of life. Do you want to live like this for the next three years."
She says for her it was an easy decision to try and remove the mayor. Carter has a teenager.
"I just want my son to make it to college and not be shot."
She says they have launched a website with more information at... MayorCantrellRecall.com.
Carter says they have far more than 1,000 petition signatures already; but with so many locations and drop off sites, it is too early for an complete tally. She hopes to get more than 100,000 before the six month deadline. Around 53,000 are needed to force an election.
The organizers add that if anyone who helps with the effort or signs a petition is intimidated they should notify the Louisiana Secretary of State's office at 800-722-5305.
