Inmates in the Orleans Justice Center have barricaded themselves inside a high-security pod, demanding the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office make upgrades to that pod.

According to a report by our partners at WWL-TV, the inmates wrote a letter asking for the upgrades and gave it to jail staffers. Right now, deputies are negotiating with the inmates to resolve and de-escalate the situation. Sheriff’s office officials say no one has been hurt and that there has been no violence related to this standoff.

A similar, yet smaller, standoff occurred earlier in a women’s pod, but it was resolved quickly.

These demonstrations come 10 days after the last in a series of stabbings inside the jail. A total of four male inmates were stabbed during four separate fights in the jail between July 28 and August 3. Three of the inmates who were stabbed were taken to the hospital and treated; the other was treated inside the jail. All of the victims were later moved to different pods. Those incidents remain under investigation.
