Billing complaints continues to be one of the Sewerage & Water Board's biggest non-drainage problems, and today, the board will present information to a New Orleans City Council committee on what it hopes will offer a solution: smart meters.

"The smart meter is the ultimate solution," said New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board leader Ghassan Korban.

Korban says the smart meters will mean fewer estimated bills, and more accurate billing.

"We're probably a week or two away from launching the first 10,000 bills that will be driven by the smart meter," he told WWL's Newell Normand. "We're on track to deliver about 70,000, seven-zero, by the end of the year."

It has been a long time coming, with plans to introduce smart metering going back more than ten years.

It will take some time before all 140,000 residential and commercial meters are replaced
