Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards spoke Friday about the murder of a young woman and kidnapping of her two daughters, that ended with one girl murdered in Jackson, Mississippi.
Sheriff Edwards said the investigation is still in its early stages, but after detectives had a chance to interview the suspect, Daniel Callihan, he feels better about building a strong case against him.
"Our case is stronger after interviewing him than before," Edwards said.
Callihan will likely face murder charges in Louisiana for the death of 35-year-old Callie Brunett. Mississippi authorities, meanwhile, are pursuing charges in the death of four-year-old Erin Brunett.
Sheriff Edwards said it will be up to prosecutors to decide whether or not Callihan will face the death penalty, but also said if there were ever a case where he thought it would apply, it is this one.
"If you believe in the death penalty and you are a supporter of the death penalty I don't know how you can believe that this is not an appropriate case to charge someone and try and get the death penalty," he said.
Meanwhile, Mississippi authorities are holding an alleged accomplice, Victoria Cox. Edwards did not elaborate on what charges she may face.
Sheriff Edwards said in the meantime, the family of the victims are dealing with their loss, and trying to figure out what six-year-old Jalie Brunett will need to cope with the loss of her mother and younger sister.
