Two Lafayette men who were already cutting their losses on unsold seafood now reportedly have a hefty fine to pay on top of that after the way they chose to dispose of their unwanted shellfish.

Austin R. Barbier, 23, and Adam M. Ory, 20, were cited for allegedly dumping sacks of dead crawfish at Hebert’s Boat Launch in Vermilion Parish, according to KLFY-TV.

“Ory was also cited for selling or buying fish without a retail seafood license, violating interstate commerce regulations, and failing to maintain records,” KLFY reported.

The men were cited by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries for gross littering, and the penalties could be steep.

If found guilty of gross littering, the sentence could include a $900 fine, up to 30 days in jail, and 16 hours of community service in a litter abatement program.
