OPINION: Scoot: Is Trump TV coming?

The stage appears set for President Trump to leave the spotlight of the White House and move into the spotlight of cable news.

During the 2016 presidential campaign and again during the 2020 campaign, I mentioned on my radio talk show that if Donald Trump lost either election, it seems likely that he would enter the world of cable TV news.

In the minds of President Trump and his most loyal supporters, the sun may not have yet set on his presidency; but it’s early evening in the minds of rational America. The charade of continues with various plots for Trump continuing on as POTUS; but with judges throwing out challenge after challenge of voter fraud and reality gaining a grip on America, it is obvious that Donald Trump will soon be “former President Trump.” But that does not mean Trump supporters will not have a place to coalesce.

About two weeks ago, an article in the L.A. Times published an article speculating that President Trump might venture into a cable news channel. Each time I have mentioned President Trump and a cable news channel, I have said how successful I thought it would be. The President’s base is large enough to make his cable news channel a huge success.

It would be an excellent way for President Trump to feed his always-starving ego and would also give his supporters the alternative universe they may be seeking.

Today, CNN Business is reporting that Trump supporters are looking for an alternative to The Fox News Channel. Many Trump supporters have been highly critical of Fox News for projecting Joe Biden the winner in the close Arizona race days before Biden was declared the winner in Arizona by CNN and other media outlets. In the end, Fox News was right, but the network was punished solely because of its projection of the truth.

In recent ratings, Fox News has dominated both MSNBC and CNN. But when the ratings of MSNBC and CNN were combined - they beat Fox News, which means there is an equal divide among viewers seeking a left-leaning message and a right-leaning message.

Newsmax and One America News are alternative conservative news networks, but neither has reached the level of competing with the big three cable news networks. However, with his recent bashing of Fox News, President Trump directed his supporters to Newsmax and One America News, and both have seen a surge in ratings. Newsmax has been attracting about 100,000 viewers at best; and Greg Kelly, the top host, and his show have suddenly jumped to nearly one million viewers per night.

CNN’s chief media correspondent Brian Stelter said on his show “Reliable Sources” Sunday that “Fox has never seen competition like this” and “there is demand for a fictional universe” that is seeking information that supports what they want to believe over the truth.

It’s called “confirmation bias." It is the act of gravitating to news sources that support what you want to be true over what is actually true, and the sudden influx of viewers to Newsmax seems to prove that point.

Perhaps President Trump and others would form a partnership and take over the existing Newsmax, rather than start their own news cable network from the ground up.

The fact that many Trump supporters are drawn toward a media source that reflects their version of the truth confirms that too many Americans do not care about what is actually true or reality - they care only about finding the comfort zone provided by a source that echoes their thoughts over what is actually true.

The desire to live in an alternate universe where everything Trump says or does is gospel suggests the great American divide will never be healed. The failure to seek the truth over fantasy diminishes the value of the Constitution and directly threatens the foundation upon which America was built.

May God Bless America...
