Johnnie Walker whiskey will be sold in completely paper-based bottle packaging starting next year, according to its parent company.
Diageo, the maker of the drink, announced in mid-July that it would introduce “100% plastic free” bottles “made entirely from sustainably sourced wood,” reports CNBC.
The new bottle was developed in partnership with venture management firm Pilot Lite, a collaboration which led to the establishment of Pulpex Limited, which Diageo referred to as a “sustainable packaging technology company.”
“The bottle is made from sustainably sourced pulp to meet food-safe standards and will be fully recyclable in standard waste streams,” said Diageo, which also manufactures brands like Guinness and Baileys Irish Cream.
The packaging will be created from pulp that is sourced sustainably sourced, adheres to food safety guidelines, and will be fully recyclable.
Pulpex Limited aims to create a design that can be used across a variety of products. The company, in fact, has established what it calls a “consortium” of fast-moving consumer goods (FMGC) companies that include PepsiCo and Unilever, with additional partners slated for later this year.
The move is in line with a broader shift in the beverage industry to develop eco-conscious, sustainable packaging.
In fact, Diageo itself announced in 2019 that it would be introducing fully recyclable and biodegradable packaging to multipack beer products like Guinness.
