Barbie is going green!

Mattel announced the launch of the first ever Barbie doll line made from recycled ocean-bound plastic.

The launch is part of the toy giant’s mission to achieve 100%, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials across all of its products and packaging by 2030, the company stated in a press release.

Barbie's new collection includes three dolls whose bodies are made from 90% recycled ocean-bound plastic parts. The collection also includes a Beach Shack playset and accessories, made from over 90% recycled plastic.

“This Barbie launch is another addition to Mattel’s growing portfolio of purpose-driven brands that inspire environmental consciousness with our consumer as a key focus,” said Richard Dickson, President and Chief Operating Officer, Mattel.

“At Mattel, we empower the next generation to explore the wonder of childhood and reach their full potential. We take this responsibility seriously and are continuing to do our part to ensure kids can inherit a world that’s full of potential, too.”

Mattel says they are continuing their efforts towards inclusion and sustainability by committing to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) goal which aims to achieve 95% recycled or FSC-certified paper and wood fiber materials in their packaging by the end of 2021, according to the release.

Barbie’s new brand campaign “The Future of Pink is Green” will “leverage the brand’s iconic association of pink” alongside the association of green to “educate kids on the importance of sustainability.”

Barbie is also teaming up with 4ocean, an environmental non-profit, to create limited edition 4ocean x Barbie bracelets. Each bracelet is made with post-consumer recycled materials and hand-assembled by artisans in Bali.

For each bracelet sold, 4ocean will pull one pound of trash from oceans, rivers and coastlines and contribute education materials to “inspire and empower the next generation,” Mattel says.

Each doll retails for around $9.99 and the “Ocean Beach Shack Playset” retails for around $19.99.
