NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A woman died and several others were injured in an overnight fire in Rego Park – the second deadly fire in a city high-rise this weekend.
Anna Latek, 51, was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital after being rushed there for smoke inhalation.
Three other residents suffered smoke inhalation after the fire broke out at 87-30 62nd Ave. shortly before midnight Saturday.
Those three victims were taken to Booth Memorial Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
The fire broke out in a fifth-floor apartment of the building, fire officials say.
The smoke was so thick that it traveled from the fifth floor up to the seventh floor, where Joe lives.
"We see smoke coming out of the vents in the kitchen and the bathroom, and we hear the fire engines coming down the block," Joe told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern.
The FDNY was able to get the fire under control, but the fire marshal was still investigating the cause Sunday.
The windows of the fifth-floor apartment were blown out and charred as daylight broke.
The deadly fire hit close to home for Kim, another resident of the building.
"I feel terrible," she said. "There shouldn't be anyone dying."
An elderly couple was killed and several firefighters were injured in a fire at a ritzy East Side high-rise on Saturday. Sources told 1010 WINS they believe the wife may have been smoking in bed.
