Carbon monoxide Brooklyn

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A man is dead and four more people are sick after carbon monoxide filled a home in East Williamsburg early Saturday.

Two men and two women were taken to Cornell Medical Center in stable condition, officials said.

But when police arrived at the two-story, abandoned home near Jackson Street and Woodpoint Road just after 6 a.m., they found the body of a man in a second-floor hallway.

Firefighters detected extremely high levels of carbon monoxide.

Deputy Chief Fred Schaaf said the FDNY is looking at a generator used by squatters in the building as the cause.

"The generator was not running when we got here. Whether it was running previously, we don't know," Schaaf said.

Sharon Carols lives down the block. She told 1010 WINS that she was worried when firefighters came by her building to check the levels there.

"It was really scary," Carols said. "I'm definitely going to get my carbon monoxide detectors checked as soon as possible to make surue that they're working correctly.

Her building was deemed safe but another building was briefly evacuated.

The medical examiner will determine how the man died.
