NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A massive fire in the Bronx left ten people, including nine firefighters, injured Friday night.
One resident was also injured when the fire broke out around 8 p.m. in the top floor of a six-story building near Rockwood Street and the Grand Concourse in Mount Eden.
The fire quickly spread to the cockloft of the building. Melvin Ruiz told ABC7 that the fire was coming from his ceiling and that he had little time to react.
"It just happened so fast. I only had time to go get the dogs and a couple of things," he said.
Felicia Gibbs told CBS2 she was in bed with her husband at the time when they smelled smoke.
"I went to look out the window and that's when I saw the fire trucks outside," Gibbs said. "I looked up and I just saw the smoke coming off the top of the building."
More than 200 firefighters were called to the scene. The five-alarm fire was brought under control around midnight.
Most of the injuries were minor, but one firefighter and one resident were described as seriously hurt. None of the injuries are life-threatening.
The FDNY believes the cause of the fire was electrical.
It's not known how many people were displaced.
