NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 10-year-old boy has died after he was struck by an SUV while riding his bike in Brooklyn on Saturday morning, police say.
The 29-year-old driver of the Ford Explorer, Victor Mejia of Brooklyn, stayed at the scene but was charged with failing to yield to a bicyclist, failure to exercise due care and driving without a license.
The boy, Dalerjon Shahobiddinov of Brooklyn, was hit by the car near Seton Place and Foster Avenue in Midwood around 10:30 a.m., according to police.
The NYPD says Mejia was making a left turn onto Foster Avenue from Seton Place when he struck the boy, who was in a crosswalk.
Shahobiddinov was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center but died, according to police, who said he had suffered traumatic injuries.
The Daily News reports that he would be the 22nd bicyclist killed on city streets this year. That’s more than double the number of cyclists killed all last year.
Just two weeks ago, a 14-year-old boy died after being hit by a truck in Long Island City.
