20-pound piece of metal falls off subway tracks on to livery car

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 20-pound piece of medal fell from elevated train tracks onto a livery car in Queens Tuesday afternoon.

The debris fell onto the car along Liberty Avenue at 100th Street in Ozone Park from the A subway line.

The metal was what is called a D-Wedge and is used to hold guardrails in place.

There were no injuries.

MTA NYC Transit President Andy Byford visited the site Tuesday evening to apologize to the driver.

He said that transit officials are launching an investigation and inspections will be done on all 60 miles of elevated tracks in the city.

He ordered inspectors to physically check more than 325,000 baskets within the course of the next seven days.

The baskets have been part of the elevated structures for years in areas with large bolts, and debris was supposed to fall into the baskets, which are designed to keep the debris from falling onto the street.

More netting will also be added in four places.

This is the third time there has been a complaint about falling debris damaging a card in the past week and the sixth time so far in 2019.

A large metal bolt fell from elevated tracks in Long Island City on Oct. 22.

Another driver on Oct. 25 said debris smashed through her sunroof as she drove in Brooklyn, although inspectors couldn't find any objects from the tracks.
