NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday the state is on "pause" and that "100 percent of the workforce must stay home."
"New York State is on pause," Cuomo said. "First rule: Only essential businesses will be functioning. Second rule: Stay indoors."
Non-essential workers and businesses are exempt from the order. Those include shipping, media, warehousing, grocery and food production, pharmacies, healthcare providers, utilities, banks and related financial institutions.
There are 8516 cases of coronavirus in New York, up from 7,102 cases earlier Friday. There are 4,408 cases in NYC. The death toll rose to 44 in the state. Most of those are senior citizens.
"In total, we did 32,000 tests - we did 10,000 last night." 18 percent of people are hospitalized.
Cuomo also said Friday the state is planning on having hospitals cancel all non-elective surgeries.
He also said the state needs supplies -- especially ventilators and urged people who had them and did not need them to give them to the state.
"We need those ventilators," Cuomo said Friday. "Ventilators to this war are what missiles were to WWII."
Cuomo also said he is going to stop any evictions for residential and commercial tenants for 90 days.
Earlier Friday, Cuomo ordered all barbershops, hair salons, nail salons, tattoo or piercing parlors and related personal care services to close amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The businesses will have to close starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, the governor's office said.
The order also affects nail technicians, cosmetologists and estheticians, electrolysis and laser hair removal services.
Cuomo said the services cannot be provided while maintaining social distance.
Indoor portions of shopping malls, amusement parks and bowling alleys in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania had to close by 8 p.m. Thursday.
The states have already coordinated on the temporary closure of movie theaters, gyms and other measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
