Airline catering workers stage protest at JFK during historically busy travel day

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Elected officials are joining airline food workers for a "die-in" protest inside Terminal 8 at at John F. Kennedy Airport on Tuesday.

Hundreds of airline catering workers at JFK are joining thousands protesting at other airports throughout the U.S. on historically busy travel day.


New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer were amongst the politicans who attended the protest. 

Airline employees and supporters are calling for American Airlines to address poverty wages, expensive health care, and take the necessary steps to ensure that workers who cater its flights are able to escape poverty.

Employees claim that their work is essential to airline operations yet about 70 percent of workers at the biggest airline catering shop at JFK are paid the Port Authority minimum wage and many depend on Medicaid or go without any health insurance at all., while American reported an annual profit of $1.9 billion in 2018.

By rallying days before Thanksgiving, workers hope they will motivate American to resolve the labor dispute.
