NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- On Tuesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city's "biggest change in alternate side of the street parking in two decades."

From now on, New Yorkers will only be required to move their cars once a week instead of twice.

"Alternate side parking has been done the same way for a long, long time, de Blasio said.

Under the new alternate side parking regulations which begin June 29,  New Yorkers will only need to move their vehicles once a week.

Streets in the five boroughs will be cleaned no more than once a week when alternate side parking is in effect.

Neighborhoods with street cleanings scheduled several times a week will now only have streets cleaned on the latest day posted on the street's sign under the new regulations, de Blasio explained.

If residents currently need to move their car on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, they will just have to move it on Saturday for cleaning.

The mayor said that parking rules would continue to be suspended through June 28 and alternate side parking will resume next week before the city decides each week whether to resume or suspend the new regulations based on street conditions.
