Byford, who is British, resigned from the MTA in January after two years at the helm. London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced Byford’s appointment on Twitter Wednesday morning.

“I’m delighted to confirm Andy Byford as London’s new transport commissioner,” he wrote.

“Andy brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise to lead (Transport for London) as we face the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19, and work to build a cleaner, greener city,” he added.

In a statement provided to the New York Times, Byford said he was “delighted to be taking up the role of Commissioner and to have been chosen to lead the organization where I started my transport career over 30 years ago.”

When Byford stepped down from his post at the MTA in January, he “suggested that (Gov. Andrew Cuomo) had sidelined him by initiating an agency overhaul that took away some of his power,” the outlet reported.

Byford will start his new job on June 29, according to the outlet.
