JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey police officer shot and wounded a man who prosecutors said "lunged at" officers with a knife.

The Hudson County prosecutor's office said Jersey City police were dispatched shortly before 6 p.m. Friday after a report of an intoxicated person fighting.

Responding officers found a man armed with a knife who refused to drop the weapon even after they used pepper spray, prosecutors said.

The man "instead lunged with the knife at officers" and one officer fired, striking him, according to prosecutors.

The man was taken to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment; there was no immediate word on his condition.

Police said he faces aggravated assault and weapons charges; his name and other details weren't immediately released.

Hudson County prosecutors are investigating and say the state attorney general's office has been notified.
