NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A surfer helped save a woman who was swept away by currents at Rockaway Beach, but a second woman who was missing was found dead Saturday.

Police divers responded to a call about swimmers in distress at 7:15 p.m. Friday. A surfer helped pull one woman out of the water, police said.

But rescuers were unable to locate a 21-year-old woman, an NYPD spokesperson said.

The search was called off late Friday but resumed Saturday morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the missing woman was found dead in the surf by police Saturday morning.

"Please be safe on the water this weekend and know your limits as a swimmer. The water can be an unforgiving place," the Coast Guard tweeted.

Police confirmed to 1010 WINS that a woman's body was recovered in the waters near the area. She has not been identified.

Swimming is prohibited at New York City beaches after Labor Day, when lifeguards are no longer present, but many people go in the water anyway.

At least seven people drowned at Rockaway Beach in 2019.
