NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Nearly 50,000 were without power throughout the city on Sunday, with most of the power outages occurring in Brooklyn after Con Edison purposely cut power to 30,000 customers.

Currently, Con Edison expects to have the 14,000 customers now without service restored by this afternoon.

Con Edison is distributing dry ice at two locations in Brooklyn to customers affected by the power outages brought on by the weekend heat wave.

The company has set up customer service vans at Seaview Avenue and 93rd Street near Seaview Park and the Bay View Houses in Canarsie and also at Jacob Joffe Fields at Avenue K and East 59th Street in Flatlands.

Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide and should be used only in well-ventilated areas and instructions for safe handling and disposal of dry ice are printed on the bag containing the ice.Con Edison has not restored power to all of its customers and it is estimated that over 13,000 customers still remain without power in Brooklyn.

Con Edison says they continue to work hard to restore power safely to customers in the Flatlands.

The red cross opened a temporary shelter at JHS 278 in Marine Park.

One of the two senior facilities affected by outage has power back. Generators are on way to the other.

Air conditioned buses were stationed outside for seniors to stay comfortable.

FDNY and EMS continue to check in on residents across the area who rely on medical equipment.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he's sending 200 state troopers, 100 generators and 50 light towers to Brooklyn. He urged New Yorkers to check on neighbors.
