NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 13-year-old boy was thrown to the ground by a man in Montana for wearing a hat during the national anthem, police say.
The assault happened on Saturday at the Mineral County Fairgrounds.
Megan Keeler says she got a call saying that her son was on the way to the hospital soon after dropping him off at the fairgrounds.
Witnesses said Curt Brockway attacked the 13-year-old after he entered Rodeo Arena.
Brockway told witnesses that he assaulted the boy because he was disrespecting the U.S. flag by keeping his hat on during the playing of the national anthem.
Keeler said, "All the witnesses I have talked to said this was completely random. There was no exchange, nothing! He targeted Wally and took him down."
The teen was tended to by emergency responders, who flew him to a hospital.
He suffered skull fractures and his skull bled for almost six hours before eventually coming home to recover from his injuries.
Brockway was arrested and released without posting bond.
