NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A boy, believed to be around 8-years-old, died after the boat he was in started taking on water and overturned Friday at the Haverstraw Marina in Rockland County.
The child was one of 8 people on the boat -- one adult and seven children -- when it overturned around 1 p.m. The passengers were from nearby Monsey.
The boat was about 100 feet offshore.
All of the passengers -- who were wearing life jackets -- were reportedly able to hold onto the boat until first responders arrived, but the boy had been in the chilly waters longer than the others.
It is unclear why the boat took on water.
The passengers were transferred to the Montefiore Nyack Hospital.
According to WNBC, the boy is the grandson of an "internationally prominent rabbi."
The Haverstraw Marina is located on Haverstraw Bay, which is the widest part of the Hudson River.
