Brooklyn neighborhood mourns loss of 40-year-old Nathan's

Nathan's Brooklyn

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Brooklyn Nathan's franchise is marking its final day on Sunday after 40 years in business.

It's not the most famous Nathan's in Coney Island, but the one on 86th Street on the border of Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge.

The Nathan's has been there since the late 1970s. It was a Wetson's before that.

A sign on the front door of the establishment thanks customers for "40 years of friendship and great memories."

There's an Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips at the location, which also closes Sunday after the property was sold to developers.

Local residents expressed their sadness about the closing.

Dario told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman he didn't even know Sunday was the last day.

"I feel bad," he said. "Sometimes I'd cross the bridge just to come and have a Nathan's hamburger or a hot dog. All my life I lived in Bensonhurst, so this is the neighborhood Nathan's."

Nina came with her son and loaded their tray with dogs and fries.

"It's terrible to see it go," she said. "I've been taking my kids here since they were little. I used to come with my mom."

Katie and Sal were meeting a group of friends to enjoy the hot dogs one last time.

"We've been coming here since we were 14," Katie said.

"I come here weekly through the drive-thru," Sal said. "We're going to miss it because there's no other drive-thru, there's no other fast food around here. And there's no Nathan's other than Coney Island."
