NEW YORK (1010 WINS) —First Lady Chirlane McCray and Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen have announced four new monuments honoring women who have made extraordinary contributions to New York City.
The four women are singer Billie Holiday, 19th century civil rights activist Elizabeth Jennings Graham, civil rights activity and pediatrician Helen Rodriguez Trias and New York Harbor light house keeper Katherine Walker.
The announcement was held at the Brooklyn Museum.
The monumnets are part of the "She Built NYC" initative, which launched last year in an effort to reconcile a lack of female representation in public statues across the city.
The first monument will honor the late congressman Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to congress.
It is expected to be completed in Prospect Park next year.
