CORONAVIRUS IN NYC: Cases near 190K, total deaths rise by 100 to over 20,500

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – New York City's coronavirus death toll was over 20,500 Saturday as the number of cases approached 190,000.

New data from the city health department shows there were 189,031 cases in the five boroughs as of Saturday.

That's 1,183 more cases than the 187,848 reported Friday.

The number of confirmed deaths was 15,756, while the number of "probable" deaths from COVID-19 was 4,820.

There were 15,422 confirmed deaths and 5,054 probable deaths on Friday.

The combined death toll citywide is 20,576, up 100 from 20,476 Friday.

A total of 49,969 people across the city have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

Here's the breakdown of cases by borough:

  • The Bronx: 42,966 (23%)
  • Brooklyn: 51,509 (27%)
  • Manhattan: 23,428 (12%)
  • Queens: 58,170 (31%)
  • Staten Island: 12,867 (7%)
  • Unknown: 91

Meanwhile, the number of NYPD officers calling in sick during the coronavirus pandemic has hit a new low.

On Friday, 1,157 uniformed officers were out sick, representing 3.2 percent of the patrol force at the nation's largest police department.

Officials said that's about the same average sick rate as before the virus outbreak.

The number of officers out sick hit a high in April of 7,155 or 19.8 percent.

So far, 5,552 members of the NYPD have tested positive for coronavirus, with 5,305 recovering and returning to work. There have been 42 deaths.
