As of Thursday afternoon, a total of 25,959 people in the county had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Latimer said. The county's death toll now stands at 863.
"We are now within range of 900 people who have died from the COVID virus," Latimer said, noting that the 863 deaths represent a 3.3 percent fatality rate for the county. "It's a sobering number to deal with."
"It's certainly higher than the flu would be any given year," he added. "This is worse."
There are 8,955 active cases in Westchester currently, and 990 people are hospitalized, Latimer said.
"That is the first time we've dipped below 9,000 cases in a couple of weeks," he said. "Unfortunately, the number of deaths continue to rise."
