NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Councilman Joe Borelli, the Republican lawmaker who represents Staten Island, is gearing up to take on Democrat incumbent and former councilman Jumaane Williams in a special election for public advocate.

"Brace yourselves," Borelli told The New York Post. "I'll give a [formal] announcement in the coming weeks."

Borelli, who has service on City Council since 2016, has been chossen by NYC's five county GOP leaders as the party's nominee for November's special election.

"Joe's not only a strong voice on Staten Island, but he's also well-known throughout the city, and even the country," Michael Rendino, chairman of the Bronx Republican Party, told the Post. "When he talks, people listen."
