HOUSTON (1010 WINS) – A Texas country music star who has been called the "next Garth Brooks" was accidentally shot to death with a gun being used as a music video prop.

Justin Carter was killed by the gun at his apartment, Triple Threat Management told ABC7 in Los Angeles.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but Triple Threat told ABC7 the gun was for a music video shoot.

Carter's mother elaborated on the incident in a tribute to him on his Facebook page this week, calling the shooting accidental.

"This was ruled as an unfortunate accident. A great loss for our family. He will be missed but will for ever be in our hearts," she wrote.

Carter had recently signed a deal with Triple Threat and was considered a rising star in the industry.

"Justin had a potential to, you know, in our eyes, and a lot of people's eyes to be the next Garth Brooks," Mark Atherton, of Triple Threat, told ABC7.

He said Triple Threat plans to release the rest of his music and give the proceeds to his family.
