NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia is considering running for mayor, but trash problems caused by budget cuts could hold her back.
Garcia "has reached out to political consultants and business and labor leaders to discuss a possible bid," and is expected to make a decision within the next few months, Politico first reported.
The city's growing trash problem, however, could stymie her bid. Garcia's department's budget has been slashed by $100 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the outlet.
Mayor Bill de Blasio tapped Garcia to lead the department in March 2014, when she was still serving as chief operating officer of the city's Department of Environmental Protection.
During his briefing Wednesday morning, de Blasio said Garcia "spoke to me some months ago and said it's something she might consider."
"To the best of my knowledge, she hasn't made a final decision," he added.
