Driver, 21, faces multiple charges after fatal collision in Queens

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 21-year-old man faces multiple charges after a fatal collision with a 63-year-old man in Queens.

On Dec 11, at approximately 3:16 p.m., police responded to a 911 call of vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck on Onderdonk Avenue at Gates Avenue in the Ridgewood section.


Upon arrival, officers 63-year-old Kwok Cheung lying on the roadway with severe head trauma.

EMS transported the man to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where he died on Dec. 13, 2019.

NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined Cheung was attempting to cross Gates Avenue from north to south on the west side of Onderdonk Avenue within the marked crosswalk.

At the same time, 21-year-old Raymond Mersier, driving a 2007 BMW X5 SUV, was traveling south bound on Onderdonk Avenue and disobeyed a stop sign at Gates Avenue.

Mersier made a right turn onto west bound Gates Avenue, and struck Cheung with the front of the vehicle, knocking him to the ground.

Mersier remained at the scene and was arrested.

He was charged with Motor Vehicle Failed to Yield to a Pedestrian/Bicyclist, Equipment Violation: Windshield Tint Violation, Equipment Violation: Safety Glass, Failure to Use Due Care- Cause Serious Injury and Failed to Stop at Stop Sign.
