NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A former lawyer for Mayor Bill de Blasio is considering running for mayor of New York City, according to reports.
Civil rights attorney Maya Wiley has stepped down from her role as an MSNBC and NBC News contributor and filed paperwork with the New York City Campaign Finance Board to launch a "Maya for Mayor" campaign account, Politico reported, citing a source familiar with the matter.
Wiley was de Blasio's top lawyer up until June 2016, when she left the role to take the helm at the Civilian Complaint Review Board. She left the CCRB a little over a year later to dedicate more time to her job as a professor at The New School.
Politico's source told the outlet Wiley "has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from New Yorkers encouraging a candidacy for mayor." She will likely campaign on a platform of police reform, according to the outlet.
If Wiley does run, she is expected to face challengers including Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and City Comptroller Scott Stringer.
