NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 15-year-old girl was hospitalized after a violent beating while heading home after school on a city bus in Staten Island.

It is swollen shut."The teen boarded the S59 bus at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Richmond Avenue in Eltingville on Monday at around 3 p.m. after class at the Nicotra Charter School, located just a few steps from the bus stop, the child's godfather said.A group of teens from another school between the age of 14 and 15 were already on the bus harassing passengers when the victims boarded according to reports.

"A couple of kids got back onto the bus and then the bus driver closed the doors and left and then the rest of the kids ended up running off."The girl was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton.A 14-year-old was taken into custody for assault an NYPD spokesman said. There has been a petition to raise attention about the incident which has been posted online and has already gotten over 600 signatures. The teen has been released from the hospital, but has yet to return to school."She doesn't want to leave the house," Aries said.
