NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The Golden Globes are looking more like the Grammy Awards with Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Elton John competing for best original song at the ceremony.
The nominees for the 2020 show were announced on Monday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and nominees include the Oscar-winning wife-husband songwriting team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez ("Into the Unknown" from “Frozen II") and Cynthia Erivo ("Stand Up") from the film “Harriet."
Cynthia Erivo earned an acting nomination for her role as Harriet Tubman and could become an EGOT winner.
Erivo has already won an Emmy, Grammy and Tony for her work on Broadway's “The Color Purple." Erivo shares her music nomination with co-writer Joshuah Brian Campbell.
Beyoncé scored the fourth Golden Globe nomination of her career for co-writing the song "Listen" from "The Lion King," where she voiced the character Nala.
Taylor Swift is nominated for her third Globe for the song "Beautiful Ghosts", which she co-wrote with Andrew Lloyd Webber from "Cats" .
Elton John picked up a nomination for “(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from his “Rocketman” biopic. He shares his nomination with longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin.
John previously won a Globe for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" from the original 1994 "The Lion King".
Jennifer Lopez, is up for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in any motion picture thanks to her well-received role in the film "Hustlers," which includes appearances by Cardi B, Keke Palmer and Lizzo.
Lopez was received her first and only Globe nomination in the ‘90s for her starring role in “Selena,"
Noah Baumbach's divorce portrait “Marriage Story” led all films with six nominations including best picture, drama, and acting nods for its two leads, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.
Randy Newman, who has not won despite six other Globe nods, is up for best original score with “Marriage Story."
Three other Netflix films landed best picture nods, including Martin Scorsese's mob epic "The Irishman," which landed five nominations for best drama picture, best director for Scorsese and supporting acting nods for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.
Also scoring five nods was Quentin Tarantino's 1960s Los Angeles fable “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" also scored five nominations.
Tarantino is also up for best director.
But Netflix flexed its muscles across all categories, just as it is girding for battle with a host of new streaming services. Two other films garnered best picture nods: the Vatican bromance “The Two Popes" in the drama category (along with nominations for its stars, Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins), and the Eddie Murphy-led “Dolemite Is My Name” in the comedy category (along with an acting nod for Murphy).
Two Netflix series tied HBO's “Chernobyl” with the most nominations on the TV side: “The Crown” and “Unbelievable." All scored four nods. Netflix's “The Kominsky Method” and “The Politician" also landed best series, comedy or musical, nominations alongside Emmy favorites “Fleabag," from Amazon, and HBO's “Barry.”
HBO held strong with 15 nods overall, second to Netflix's 17 television nominations, led by “Chernobyl," "Succession" and "Big Little Lies".
Amazon had 8 nominations in total, boosted by "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and "Fleabag," and the recently launched Apple TV Plus scored its first Globes nominations with "The Morning Show," nominating Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
The film "Joker" landed nods for best film, drama, and for Joaquin Phoenix's performance.
Other nominees include Alexandre Desplat ("Little Women"), Hildur Guđnadóttir ("Joker"), Thomas Newman ("1917") and Daniel Pemberton ("Motherless Brooklyn")
The 2020 Golden Globes on NBC on Jan. 5.
