NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The infant daughter of an FDNY firefighter has died of coronavirus, the FDNY Hispanic Society announced on Thursday.
Jay-Natalie La Santa, the daughter of firefighter Jerel La Santa and Lindsey Velasquez, died Monday morning. She was just days away from turning 5-months-old. She was reportedly hospitalized at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore in The Bronx
"One of the worst experiences as a parent is to go through the loss of a child," FDNY Hispanic Society president Jose Prosper wrote on Instagram. "It is with extreme sorrow to announce the passing of Jay-Natalie La Santa."
He wrote that the child was called "'Warrior princess.' a title given to her by her Father Jerel, for her fighting spirit against the horrible covid-19 Virus. Rest in peace little one, God bless you. Please keep the La Santa family close in prayer and for peace during this difficult of times."
He also provided the link to a GoFundMe page to help the family with medical expenses. As of late Thursday afternoon, about $34,000 had been raised so far.
The FDNY said in a statement, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the La Santa family during this tragic time."
