NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- J.C. Penney will shutter two New York City stores, in addition to the approximately previously-announced 150 stores, following its announcement last month that it has filed for bankruptcy, according to a report.
The locations at Manhattan Mall near Herald Square and at Kings Plaza in the Mill Basin section of Brooklyn are set to kick off closure sales, CNBC reporter Lauren Thomas tweeted Tuesday.
There were no New York City locations included in the first couple of batches of store closing lists. J.C. Penney has locations in all 5 boroughs.
The 118-year-old Plano, Texas-based retailer, which has more than 800 stores, filed for Chapter 11 protection in federal bankruptcy court for the Southern District of Texas in early June.
Sales at J.C Penney have steadily fallen annually since 2016.
As of February, it employed about 90,000 full- and part-time employees.
