LOS ANGELES (1010 WINS) -- "Boyz N the Hood" director John Singleton died Monday, a rep for the family told TMZ.
A Singleton family rep says he passed "peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends."
The rep announced Monday that he was going to be taken off life support, after suffering a stroke thirteen days ago.
"It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today," a spokesperson for the family said in a statement to Deadline. "This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John's doctors."
Singleton suffered a stroke at Cedars-Sinai hospital in L.A. He had been in ICU ever since.
Singleton had struggled with hypertension, the spokesman said, and that "his family wants to share the message with all to please recognize the symptoms by going to Heart.org."
The director's condition was initially revealed in a court filing from his mother, Shelia Ward, who requested she be immediately appointed his temporary conservator to make medical and financial decisions for him while he is incapacitated.
Singleton's family had previously announced that he'd had a stroke on April 17, but there had been no details revealed about the seriousness of his condition.
Friends, colleagues and fans including Viola Davis, Mark Wahlberg and Guillermo Del Toro have offered prayers and wished Singleton well since the announcement.
