NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 1 line station in Upper Manhattan has become a junkyard for junkies, riders say.
Heroin addicts have been shooting up at the 181st Street subway station in Washington Heights and then tossing their bloody needles all over the platforms and tracks.
The station has been overflowing with dirty syringes, catching the attention of people who wait there daily.
Straphanger Adam was waiting for a 1 train Tuesday morning.
"It's very grotesque," he said. "It's very heinous."
Jessica, a heroin addict who admits to occasionally disposing of her needles in the subway, says she now tries to take her syringes to a needle exchange van.
"They give us these little black things to put them in, like black little containers, and we give them back to them," she said.
Jessica says there's no excuse to toss the dirty needles now that the exchange van is here.
"The addicts who are throwing them on the tracks and platforms are just being irresponsible. They're not caring about other people's health," she said.
On Tuesday morning the platform and tracks appeared clean.
A police officer told 1010 WINS' John Montone that MTA crews swept up overnight.
