NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand has dropped out of the Democratic presidential candidate after she failed to qualify for the next debate.
"Today, I am ending my campaign for president," she tweeted Wednesday afternoon. "I am so proud of this team and all we've accomplished. But I think it’s important to know how you can best serve. To our supporters: Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Now, let's go beat Donald Trump and win back the Senate."
President Donald Trump seemed gleeful, tweeting "A sad day for the Democrats, Kirsten Gillibrand has dropped out of the Presidential Primary. I’m glad they never found out that she was the one I was really afraid of!"
The move was welcomed by the Republican Party of New York, which tweeted, "Maybe now @SenGillibrand will actually focus on the needs of New Yorkers. But we won’t hold our breath."
Sen. Kamala Harris of California tweeted, "My friend @SenGillibrand is a brave voice on some of the most critical issues facing our country today — from childcare to sexual assault. She is a champion and I know she’s not done fighting for women and families everywhere."
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement, "Senator Gillibrand is a great talent, a rising star in the Democratic Party and a good friend. The people of New York are fortunate to have her back full time."
