PERRIS, CA (1010 WINS) -- It's life behind bars for David and Louise Turpin.

They're the California couple who pleaded guilty to starving and shackling their 12 children.

  • Ahead of sentencing, there were emotional moments in court with several children making victim impact statements.

One declared, "my parents took my whole life from me, but now I'm taking my life back."

Others said they still love their parents and asked for a lighter sentence.

"Sometimes I still have nightmares of things that had happened, such as my siblings being chained up or getting beaten, but that is the past and this is now. I love my parents and have forgiven them for a lot of the things they did to us," one of the Turpin's sons said.

The Turpin children were found in their parents' Perris home in January 2018. Despite ranging in age from 2 to 29, some of the adults had been so malnourished that they looked like teenagers.

None of the Turpin children had been to a dentist, and they hadn't been to a doctor in years. The children were often denied showers and were isolated from the outside world. They were often tied up for weeks or months at a time, authorities said.

Police say the restraining began as a punishment, but got worse when one child escaped, prompting the parents to turn to chains and padlocks.

The abuse was exposed when a teenager escaped after more than two years of planning. She escaped through a window before calling the cops.

The couple apologized, but that did not sway the judge who sent them away for life.
