Gunman arrested in fatal shooting of man walking dog in Brooklyn: NYPD

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Brooklyn man was arrested and charged with murder on Tuesday for allegedly shooting another Brooklyn man as he was walking his dog early Monday morning, the NYPD said.

George Vayos, 52, of Bay Ridge, was arrested and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon on Tuesday, police said. His attorney information wasn't immediately available.

Police said Michael Scully, 62, also of Bay Ridge, was in front of his home on 74th Street, near 7th Avenue, around 6:50 a.m. on Monday when Vayos shot him in the head and shoulders.

Scully was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the NYPD said. Neighbors on Monday told 1010 WINS Scully was walking his dog when he was shot.

Vayos lives just a few blocks from Scully's home, according to police. It wasn't immediately clear if the two knew each other prior to the shooting.

On Tuesday, Brooklyn Councilman Justin Brannan, whose district includes Bay Ridge, asked local residents to "continue to keep (Scully's) family in your thoughts and prayers during this impossible time."

"Michael loved his neighborhood, loved his friends and always looked out for his neighbors," Brannan wrote on Twitter. "He was the old school 'Mayor of the block' and would give you the shirt off his back."
