Man arrested in unprovoked slashing of French tourist in Harlem

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police on Monday arrested the man wanted for the random slashing of a French tourist in Harlem.

The incident occurred on Valentine's Day as the 27-year-old vicitm was walking with his girlfriend after leaving from a breakfast at IHOP near West 132nd Street at approximately 11 a.m.

That's when authorities say 28-year-old Khalief Young slashed the tourist in the neck in an uprovoked attacke with what a knife or box cutter.

Police say the victim was visiting his girlfriend from France, who works as an au pair in Harlem.

"UPDATE Khalief Young, the suspect wanted for the unprovoked slashing that occurred in #Harlem on 2/14/20 has been apprehended,"  police tweeted. "Excellent police work by our #NYPD 32 Day Tour Patrol and the keen eyes of Officer’s Palmeri & Concepcion."

The victim was taken to Harlem Hospital where he has been recovering. 

Nearly nearly $7,000 have been raised by the victim's friends to fly him and his girlfriend back home and help pay his medical bills.

Young had been previously arrested for slashing a man in the neck in May 2019, officials said.

He was was arrested again in October for punching and kicking a man in the face in Harlem, police say.Young was arraigned and released without bail for that assault.Young is expected to be arraigned on two counts of second-degree assault on Tuesday.
