Man charged in shooting death of church caretaker, 62, in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Bronx man has been arrested in the shooting death of a 62-year-old caretaker inside a Brooklyn church earlier this week.

Moriyah Lewis, 39, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm, police announced late Thursday.

Edward James was shot once at the Glorious Church of God on Halsey Street in Stuyvesant Heights around 5 p.m. Monday, police said.

He was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.

Residents said James was a church caretaker who was beloved in the neighborhood, WABC reported.

Witnesses saw the gunman chase James into the church, where he was eventually found shot on the third floor, according to the report.

James and the gunman knew each other but a motive isn't known, police told WABC.
