Darling, 58, is a member of the Mets' TV broadcast team, but has been out of the booth for much of the 2019 season.
Earlier this month he announced that he would be taking time off from his TV gig to have a mass removed from his chest.
On Monday, Darling tweeted that tests on the mass had resulted in a thyroid cancer diagnosis.
"My doctors have said they are optimistic that the cancer is treatable and that I would be back on the air talking baseball in the nect month or so," he said.
Darling recently released a book titled '108 Stitches: Loose Threads, Ripping Yarns, and the Darndest Characters from my time in the Game.' A passage from the book led to objections and threats of legal action from Darling's former Mets teammate Lenny Dykstra.
