Che made the announcement in an Instagram post in which he wrote: “its crazy to me that residents of public housing are still expected to pay their rent when so many new yorkers can’t even work.”
The comedian said he’d pay one month’s rent for all 160 apartments at the NYCHA building.
Che said the payment is in “the spirit and memory of my late grandmother,” who he said moved out of the building in the 1990s.
He said he knows it’s just “a drop in the bucket” and he hopes the city “has a better plan for debt forgiveness for all the people in public housing, AT THE VERY LEAST.”
He also wrote that Mayor Bill de Blasio, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs should work with him to “fix this.”
