NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – What can we do if we're going to get hit by an asteroid? We'd probably just vaporize, but that's no excuse for not preparing.

NASA and FEMA are joining international groups at a practice run Monday to prepare for a theoretical collision in 2027.

The scientists and disaster management teams are trying to figure out how we should respond to an asteroid, comet or any other near-Earth object hurtling towards our planet.

Although the chances of a strike are unlikely, NASA says it'd be catastrophic in the rare chance it did occur.

The drill is coinciding with the Planetary Defense Conference in College Park, Maryland, where scientists from around the globe take on a NASA-developed fictional scenario.

"These exercises have really helped us in the planetary defense community to understand what our colleagues on the disaster management side need to know," Lindley Johnson, NASA's planetary defense officer, told Space.com.

Their real-life objective is to take action if the odds of a collision reach 1 in 100.

You can watch the Planetary Defense Conference live here starting at 8 a.m. Monday.
